Sing the Lord's Song DEPOSIT
College of Preachers
National Conference
June 18th to 20th 2012
at The Hayes Conference Centre, Swanwick, Derbyshire
Singing ‘s a metaphor for preaching; and the Lord’s song book is the Bible. We’re called to preach in a strange land. It’s not a foreign or a hostile land, because it’s God’s world; it’s holy. But it’s strange because it’s biblically illiterate, secularized - and going through a communications revolution!
We’re still working on the Conference programme, but here’s some of what’s in store.
Bishop Stephen Cottrell, the new Chair of the College, will set the conference going, with a call to have confidence in our preaching; yes, we can sing and we must!
Revd Dr Rosalind Brown from Durham Cathedral believes that we preachers need to know and be sustained by the Lord’s song ourselves before we can help others to sing it.
Revd Dr Stephen Wright, from Spurgeon’s College listens to the different voices of the Bible, will share thoughts about how they indicate the agenda for preaching, the sort of music we need to be singing.
Professor J.W. Robertson , Professor Emeritus of biblical studies at Sheffield University will look at some of the problems of interpreting the Bible in a strange land.
Dr. Katie Edwards, also from Sheffield University, will talk about ‘biblical illiteracy’ in our strange secular land. She may surprise us, and make us think afresh about the ways we use the Bible in our preaching.
And other speakers are ‘under negotiation’. Visit the website for more news early in the new year .
On top of all that, there’ll be:
worship, with sermons to listen to and discuss, and Bible study breaks
an opportunity to sample new College of Preachers e-learning material
the AGM led by Bishop Stephen, where you can have your say in shaping the future of the College
and possibly a gospel choir to entertain and lead worship.
The conference is residential. It will run from Monday 18th June to Wednesday 20th, lunch to lunch.
The cost per person is £250.00 inclusive, with an en suite room.
