Sheffield Festival of Preaching - Alive to the Word
The day will include worship with a sermon and the opportunity to discuss it. The preacher is to be Revd Dr Alan Billings, Anglican Priest, former Director of the Centre for Ethics and Religion at Lancaster University, and a regular contributor to ‘Thought for the Day’ on BBC Radio 4. It will also include the following four seminars. Each will run twice, in the morning and again in the afternoon, to give you the opportunity to attend two out of four. A. Stand Up Preaching Philip Jinadu, associate minister at the Woodlands Church, Bristol How can we preach dynamically in a way that captures the attention and imagination of seeker and saint alike? What are the concepts that we need to rediscover how to speak in a way that delights and moves people? And are some stand up comedians more Christ-like in their communication than most preachers today? B. What Do You Want Your Sermon To Do? Susan Durber, Principal of Westminster College, Cambridge Preaching is a conversation about the universal gospel with a local congregation which has its own characteristics and concerns. What part should our preaching play in serving pastoral needs of the congregation, and equipping the local church for mission? C. God is his own interpreter... J.W. Rogerson, Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies, University of Sheffield The preacher has to interpret the Bible with the congregation. Is the meaning of a text in the text or in our reading of it? What can we learn from ways in which the church has interpreted the Bible in the past? What, for preachers, are the big issues in interpretation today? D. If I Preached That Sermon Again, I Would..... Paul Johns, Director of the College of Preachers and a Methodist local preacher Expository preaching, narrative preaching, sermons with points or sermons with plots, preaching like Jesus or just preaching Jesus – what do Bible stories tell us about how to bring our sermons to life? And visual aids - you are the one that really matters!
