Advent for Preachers

Advent is often a challenge for preachers – what can we say that is a little different? Below is a list of books available to stimulate thinking and exploration of Advent themes.
Feasting on the Word Advent Companion: A Thematic Resource for Preaching and Worship

As usual with Feasting on the Word publications passages are explored from four perspectives – theological, pastoral, exegetical and homiletic. Contributors are David Bartlett, Barbara Brown Taylor and Kimberley Bracken Long. Contributions are useful and will encourage preachers to find new ways into familiar texts. As well as exegeses there are ideas for complete services for Sundays and midweek in Advent plus a Service for Hope and Healing and Eucharistic prayers for Advent and Christmas. Each Sunday also offers a children’s talk. A worthwhile investment.
Advent for Everyone: A Journey with the Apostles
Tom Wright SPCK 2017 £8.99
Using texts from Epistles and Revelation Tom Wright has produced this season specific addition to his ‘for Everyone’ series. Readable and clear.
Unearthly Beauty: Through Advent with the Saints
Magdalen Smith SPCK 2017 £8.99
A refreshingly new way of approaching Advent through contemplating a range of saints – some allocated to Advent and others to Christmas. Advent includes the well-known – Andrew, John of the Cross, Ambrose – and the less well-known – Eglantyne Jebb, Lucy. Christmas introduces some of the people round the edges – Joseph, the innkeeper – and some later saints. Each chapter ends with some prayer ideas.
The Art of Advent: A Painting a Day from Advent to Epiphany
Jane Williams SPCK 2018 £9.99
Based on 37 paintings, some well-known, some less well-known, Jane Williams presents a reflection, question for discussion and prayer for each day between the start of Advent and Epiphany. The use of images broadens our understanding of each theme. For preacher who have the available technology some of the images might usefully offer sources for sermons during this period. The reflections will be of personal value to preachers who enjoy exploring themes through different media.
