Seeking the God Beyond: A Beginner’s Guide to Christian Apophatic Spirituality by JP Williams
This book is a basic exploration of apophatic spirituality, sometimes called the via negativa, or the contemplative.
Divided into five parts the book journeys from the biblical roots of the apophatic experience, through some classic themes and early explorers, to other areas where it is found and some practices we might try. The apophatic, it seems, seeks ways into the silent heart, the mysteries of the Christian faith. Early explorers include Gregory of Nyssa and Meister Eckhart.
Preaching and teaching essentially engage the kataphatic method of trying to explain God in words. This book offers a way into exploring the God beyond words and reminds us that what we preach of is ultimately mysterious.
