Leveling the Praying Field: Can the Church we Love, Love us Back?
by Ansel Augustine

Ansel Augustine’s ‘love letter’ to the Roman Catholic Church explores the whiteness of the church from the perspective of a Black believer. His aim, he says, is to help the Catholic Church understand why Black Lives Matter.
In eight short chapters he considers the state of play, examines the challenges ahead and suggests that there is hope for the future. Each chapter ends with three questions to help readers identify their own attitudes.
While this book has nothing specific for preachers, it is worth noting that two books on a similar topic have emerged in close succession. Racism is a live issue in and for the church, and as such it is one that preachers should learn to address.
In the afterword of this book, written by the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, he asks some questions preachers might do well to consider: do you confess and profess your complicity with racism in your silence? Can you keep your hand on the gospel plow and hold on, keep the faith and run the race?
